Need Help Paying for the Program?

At Smith Horsemanship, we don’t believe financial circumstances should block true passion or potential.

If you’re serious about attending but need support, we offer limited scholarships through our True Grit Scholarship Program.

  • Do I receive a certificate at the end of the program?
Yes. Students who successfully complete the full-year program receive a Certificate of Completion from Smith Horsemanship Academy. While this is not a government-accredited qualification, it reflects practical experience, leadership growth, and professional development that is highly respected within the horse industry and related careers.
  • What’s included in the fee?
Accommodation, full-time training, mentorship, horse access, business/media development, and personal development sessions.
  • Can I pay monthly?
Yes. After your deposit, the remaining balance of R248 000 is split across: 11 monthly payments of R22 545 First payment is due by 31 December 2025 (for January) Subsequent payments are due by the last day of each month (Feb – Nov 2026)
  • Do you offer any scholarships or financial aid?

  • How much is the deposit to secure my spot?
A R5 000 non-refundable deposit is required to secure your place Payable within 7 days of acceptance Deducted from the total program fee
  • Are there discounts for paying upfront?
    Yes! Upfront Payment: Pay R243 000 by 31 Dec 2025 (save R10 000)
  • What happens if I miss a payment?
A R500 late fee applies after a 3-day grace period After 14 days: participation may be paused After 30 days: your spot may be offered to a waitlisted applicant, and legal steps may be taken for outstanding fees
  • Is the monthly plan a month-to-month commitment?
No. The monthly option is just a payment structure, not a subscription. You are committing to the entire 11-month program and full fee, regardless of the payment frequency.
  • Can I cancel or get a refund if I leave early?
No. Refunds are not given for early withdrawal. All fees up to the date of withdrawal remain payable. Only in rare, approved cases (like serious medical emergencies) will exceptions be considered.
  • Is this a Christian program?
Yes. The academy is founded on biblical principles. We have daily Bible study sessions, group discussions, and personal discipleship.
  • Is there any church involvement?
We’re not affiliated with a specific church, but students are encouraged to participate in community worship, teachings, and faith-based life application.
  • What do we teach in our Bible sessions?
At Smith Horsemanship, our Bible sessions are rooted in a desire to understand God’s Word in its original context — not filtered through modern tradition or a specific denominational doctrine. We study the Bible as a whole, from Genesis to Revelation, and aim to honour the fullness of Scripture rather than cherry-pick what’s convenient. Our focus is on: Biblical truth in original context — digging into what the Scriptures meant to the original audience, so we can apply them accurately today. Practical application — how to live out biblical principles in daily life, leadership, relationships, and personal growth. Wholeness of Scripture — we don’t divide the Old and New Testaments as separate stories. We follow the whole Bible, seeing how it all fits together. Relationship, not religion — our goal is to help students deepen their relationship with God, not just follow rules or traditions. Respect for different journeys — while we lead from a biblical worldview, we encourage genuine conversation and questions, not forced agreement. It’s not about pushing a specific church’s viewpoint. It’s about guiding students to discover biblical truth for themselves, with integrity, curiosity, and reverence.
  • What are the accommodations like?
Students stay in shared cabins or rooms on the property. Rooms are basic but comfortable, with access to bathrooms, a kitchen, and common living areas. You’ll live alongside fellow students in a tight-knit ranch community.
  • Will I have access to Wi-Fi?
Yes, limited Wi-Fi is available for basic communication, study, and admin.
  • What do I need to bring with me?
Once accepted, we’ll send you a detailed packing list including riding gear, basic bedding, clothing recommendations, and optional extras.
  • Can I bring my own car?
Yes, you are welcome, we can't however promise covered parking.
  • Is laundry available on-site?
Yes — laundry facilities are available for students to use.
  • Can friends or family visit during the year?
Yes, visits are welcome — but must be arranged in advance. We want to maintain a focused and respectful community atmosphere, so visits are scheduled during approved weekends or holidays. Families are also invited to ceremonies during the year end.
  • Is the property safe?
The premises are fully enclosed with electric fencing and monitored with security systems. Access is controlled, and we are situated in a safe rural area near Pretoria East. Staff live on-site, and the environment is secure and peaceful.
  • How do you ensure student safety — both with horses and in housing?
We take safety extremely seriously. Students are trained from day one in safe horse handling and are supervised during high-risk training. Accommodation is secure, with basic house rules in place. That said, horsemanship by nature involves risk. While we minimize danger through instruction, structure, and policy, participation is at your own risk, and we do not encourage reckless behavior or unsafe training practices.
  • Are you liable for injuries or accidents?
By applying, students (or their guardians) acknowledge that working with horses involves inherent risk. While we provide a responsible, safety-conscious environment, Smith Horsemanship Academy is not legally liable for any injury, accident, or incident that may occur. A formal indemnity form is signed before arrival.
  • What happens after the program?
Many of our graduates go on to start their own businesses, work in horse training, teach others, or continue their studies. Some even stay involved with the academy as interns or instructors. You’ll leave with a foundation that sets you up for whatever path you choose — in horses or life.
  • Will you help me start a career with horses?
Yes — through business training, mentorship, media production, and real-world client experience, we prepare you to build a sustainable future in the horse industry.
  • Can I come back for a second year?
Yes, advanced positions or instructor roles may be available for returning students by invitation.
  • Will I get support if I’m struggling emotionally or spiritually?
Absolutely. One of the core aspects of this program is mentorship. Students receive one-on-one guidance, small group discipleship, and are encouraged to be open about challenges. You’ll be surrounded by a community that genuinely wants to see you grow.
  • Is there a leader or staff member living on the premises?
Yes. Roan and his Team of staff and instructors live on-site and are actively involved in daily operations, mentorship, and safety.
  • Will I be expected to work every day?
This is a full-time training environment — but we believe in sustainability. Weekends are usually set aside for rest and worship, and we schedule breaks throughout the year.
  • What does a typical day look like?
Students wake up early, start with a prayer, care for horses, attend practical and theoretical lessons, train horses, engage in business/media classes, and wind down with community time or worship. It’s structured, physical, and rewarding.
  • Will I have time off?
Yes. We have structured breaks during the year and weekends are more relaxed, as some students go home while others stay in.
  • Is food included?
Meals are not included, it is self catering. Students usually end up taking turns to prepare meals.
  • Can I bring my own horse?
Yes — we offer limited stabling for personal horses at an additional cost. No stallions allowed.
  • Can I leave the premises whenever I want?
Students are treated as adults, but we encourage communication for safety when leaving the premises.
  • What is the dress code?
Students are expected to dress appropriately for ranch work and group settings. This includes jeans or riding tights, closed-toe shoes or boots, and weather-appropriate gear. We value modesty, practicality, and professionalism — no revealing or offensive clothing. Branded academy shirts will be available for purchase.
  • Do I need prior horse training experience?
No. We start from the ground up. Whether you’ve only ridden a few times or you’re already competing, we’ll meet you where you’re at and grow you from there.
  • Will I learn to ride?
Yes — but more importantly, you’ll learn to train, problem-solve, and understand horses at a much deeper level than typical riding schools.
  • What age group is this for?
Applicants should be between 17 and 26 years old.
  • Is it only for South African students?
No. We welcome international students and assist with travel planning and logistics.
  • What exactly is the Smith Horsemanship Academy?
A full-year, hands-on program where students learn horse training, leadership, business, and life skills — all rooted in a biblical worldview. It’s more than just horsemanship — it’s a launchpad into adulthood, purpose, and professional growth.
  • How long is the program?
The program runs for +/- 11 months, from Sunday 11 January 2026 to Friday 13 November 2026.
  • How many students are accepted per year?
We only take 10 students per intake to keep the experience personal, high quality, and hands-on.
